Identity

Identity defines us. From our general interests to our strongest passions, from our hometown to our ethnicity, identity is both simple and complex. Identity is what makes us unique but it is also gives us a sense of belonging.

Individual Identity is the identity of one person.

Collective Identity is the identity of a group of people.

In a crowd at school you may the only kid with a Star Wars shirt and this makes you feel proud to stand out as a Star Wars Fan. This is an example of Individual Identity. At a Star Wars convention that same shirt becomes a symbol of membership because everyone is wearing a Star Wars shirt. This is an example of Collective Identity.

In Social Studies we look at the Individual and Collective identities of the peoples involved in the earliest days of Canada’s development from new land to colony to country.
